EU Blue Card
workGermany's premium route for graduates holding a job offer. From 1 January 2026 you need a gross salary of at least €50,700, or €45,934.20 in a shortage occupation such as IT, engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, medicine and pharmacy, or if you graduated within the last three years. Recognition is the gate that decides everything: your Nigerian degree must come from an institution recognised by the NUC, or the NBTE for vocational qualifications, and must be rated in the anabin database — if it is not clearly rated you will need a ZAB Statement of Comparability, which costs €208 and takes around three months. Book your appointment in Abuja or Lagos as early as possible, because consular slots are the real constraint in this corridor. Family join immediately with full work rights, and permanent residence comes at 21 months with B1 German or 27 months with A1.
Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)
workA points-based job-seeker visa allowing up to a year in Germany to find work, with 20 hours a week of part-time work and trial employment permitted while you search. This is the route most Nigerian applicants actually use, because full recognition of a Nigerian degree is a slow separate process and the points system lets you qualify without it. You need six points across recognition status, qualification, work experience, German from A1 upward, English at B2, age and prior time in Germany — and a fully recognised qualification skips the points test entirely. You must also show you can support yourself, normally a blocked account of about €13,000 or a formal sponsorship undertaking. Once you find a qualifying job you switch to the Blue Card or a skilled worker permit from inside Germany.
